Handwashing with soap can help reduce the transmission of a range of infectious diseases.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the critical role good hand hygiene plays in reducing the transmission of disease, yet many people around the world don’t have access to clean water or handwashing facilities.

1 in 3 people in Malawi don’t have access to clean water.

Overview

– In 2020, we partnered with Supuni Primary School in Malawi to teach 700 students how to make their own reusable face masks. As well as supporting the community with this essential prevention method to stop the spread of coronavirus, it was identified that more awareness was needed.

“Awareness levels are also an issue as government alone does not have the ability to reach out to the masses hence they need complimentary efforts so getting the posters would also be a very good way to help raise awareness about the disease.”

– We are now working with Louisa to distribute soap and hand sanitiser to two schools in the area, including Supuni Primary School.

– In order to keep the students informed, Louisa and local health workers will conduct talks during school assemblies about COVID-19 and the importance of hand hygiene, and posters around the schools will reinforce the key messages.
